What is Line Break?

A line break is an invisible signal in text that tells your computer to stop the current line and jump down to a new one. When you press the Enter key while typing, your keyboard inserts this hidden marker into the background code of your document.

Different systems write this marker in slightly different ways:

Windows: Uses two hidden signals back-to-back: Carriage Return (\r) and Line Feed (\n).

Mac and Linux: Use just one hidden signal: Line Feed (\n).

You usually cannot see these code markers, but they dictate how your text looks.

Why Are Unwanted Line Breaks Bad for Text Formatting?

Unwanted line breaks break up complete sentences into short, fractured lines. Instead of flowing naturally to fit the screen width, text with hard returns stops mid-sentence and jumps to the next line. This creates irregular layout gaps on different screen sizes and makes documents look unformatted.

Why Does Copied PDF Text Have Extra Line Breaks?

PDF files store text using fixed visual coordinates on a page rather than continuous text flow. When a line reaches the edge of a column in a PDF, the file inserts a hard carriage return character at that exact spot.

Copying text out of a PDF transfers those hard returns into your editor, keeping the old line edges instead of letting sentences form normal paragraphs.
